Will you swim again in the pool, after reading this.?
Next time you take a refreshing
dip in a swimming pool, remember
that its water contains an
element ,the second lightest of the halogens .Chlorine, a yellowish green gas at room temperature. It is an extremely reactive element and a strong oxidising agent. The good effect is its value as a bacteria
killer. Used in the right proportion in
drinking water and swimming pools, it's
a good thing.
But in its gaseous form or in larger quantities, it's toxic and can
corrode skin. Its attributes are the product
of its instability- it has just seven
valence electrons.
The United States is a leading producer
of chlorine, despite its potential
hazards. Chlorine starts its life as salt .The chlorine is extracted from salt.
Manufactured paper, textiles, petroleum
products, medicines, antiseptics, .
insecticides, solvents, paints, and plastics
all contain chlorine. Fifty million tons of
chlorine are produced every year.
